Iron Ring, stainless steel version, circa 2004.
The Iron Ring is a symbolic ring worn by many Canadian engineers. Obtaining the ring is an optional endeavour the ring is not a prerequisite for practicing professional engineering in Canada.
The Ring is given as part of "The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer" , written by Rudyard Kipling. Many believe that the rings are made from the steel of a beam from the Quebec Bridge, which collapsed during construction in 1907, killing 75 construction workers, due to poor planning and design by the overseeing engineers; however, this is not the case. This misunderstanding may have its roots in a common practice of attaching a symbol of an engineering failure, such as a bolt from that bridge, to the chain that is held by participants in the ritual. The Ring is a symbol of both pride and humility for the engineering profession.
The Ring is worn on the little finger of the working hand, where the facets act as a sharp reminder of obligation while the engineer works. This is particularly true of recently obligated engineers, whose rings still bear facets nearly sharp enough to be considered serrations.
The Iron Ring was originally made from iron, but graduating engineering students are now usually given stainless steel rings, which do not rust. Only Camp 1 (which includes the University of Toronto, Ryerson University, York University and the UOIT) continues to provide the option of iron. Protocol dictates that the rings should be returned by retired engineers or by the families of deceased engineers. Some camps offer such iron rings or so obligated "experienced" rings, but they are now rare due to both medical and practical (industrial/construction site) complications.
The Ring itself is small and understated, designed as a constant reminder rather than a piece of jewellery. The Rings were originally hammered manually with a rough outer surface to further dispel the notion of them being worn as a trinket. The modern machined ring design emulates this manual process with a unique pattern. Twelve half-circle facets are carved into the top and bottom of the outer surface, with the two halves offset by one facet radius. To an untrained eye this appears to be manually hammered.

Canada Post stamp set commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Ritual.Issued on April 25 2000.
The Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer is the ceremony where Iron Rings are given to graduating engineers who choose to obligate themselves to the highest professionalism and humility of their profession. It is a symbol that reflects the moral, ethical and professional commitment made by the engineer who wears the ring. The ceremonies are private affairs with no publicity. Invitations to attend are extended to local engineering alumni and professional engineers by those who are scheduled to participate. For some schools, the invitation to witness the ceremony is open to anyone in the engineering profession, and non-obligated engineers may not participate in the ritual. For other schools, the invitation to witness the ceremony is open to everyone. Some graduating engineers choose to receive a ring passed on from a relative or mentor, giving the ceremony a personal touch.
Although the details of the ceremony are not secret, they are considered sacrosanct and obligated engineers normally do not discuss the ceremony, even with engineering students.
The word "camp" is used to describe these regional organizations because it conveys a smaller, close-knit sense of community.

Emperor Tang Xuanzong and officials in official/academic dress
The academic dress of China has a long history. The ancient dress is based on the robes of officialdom and the 'degrees' were earned through the imperial civil service examinations, whilst the modern dress is based on Western (more so United States) academic dress.

History
Since Chinese academia was more or less connected with officialdom, the academic dress of ancient China is essentially that of official dress. This basically consists of a red long round-collar robe with long sleeves called a yuanlingshan (???) worn with a cap called a putou (??) which was almost always black and had curved wings which was typical of the Tang dynasty. Other dynasties had similar dress with their own take on it, but they basically follow the same pattern and are distinctive from common dress.
Another form of dress was those of the literati and scholars who wore simple everyday dress but wore hats that distinctively indicated their status, such as the si-fang pingding jin (?????; or simply, fangjin: ??), the Chinese equivalent of the "mortarboard".
Modern Chinese academic dress

Lace-up mortarboards typically used in China and other Asian universities.
More Western now than modern, the current academic dress of China is very different from the ancient form. The current forms have been standardized since 1994. Gowns are closed at the front and are colored depending on the level of the degree; typically, black for bachelors, blue for masters and a combination of scarlet and black for doctoral gowns. The hood is a simple piece of triangluar cloth which is colored depending on the faculty. The mortarboard is similar to American ones, except they may have string at the back of the skullcap to tie and secure the cap to the head.
Officers' robes are typically all red (including the mortarboard) with three gold bands on the sleeves, similar to Thai academic dress.

Operation definition
Diffusion welding (DFW) is a solid state welding process by which two dissimilar metals can be bond together. Diffusion involves the migration of atoms across the joint. The two materials are pressed together at an elevated temperature usually between 50 and 70% of the melting point. The pressure is used to relieved the void that may occur due to the different surfaces.
Schematic showing tool/work material interaction.
Typical part geometry (sheet, bar, tube, castings, machined parts, etc.)
Sheet metal structures are typical product of diffusion welding.
Typical work materials (ferrous, non-ferrous, polymers, ceramics, etc.)
This process is used primary to bind dissimilar metals and to bond reactive metals(titanium, beryllium, zirconium).
Process Considerations
DFW is used for fabrication complex parts in low quantities for mainly aerospace, nuclear, and electronics industries. The equipment cost is considerably high and is figured by the area that is being diffusion-bonded. Prices fall into the range of $3 to $6/mm^2 ($2000 to $4000/in^2).
How this value-adding operation helps achieve workpiece function.
In many military aircraft diffusion bonding will help to allow for the conservation of expensive strategic and the reduction of manufacturing costs. Some aircraft have over 100 diffusion-bonded parts, including; Fuselage frames, Outboard/Inboard actuator fittings, Main landing-gear trunnion, and Nacelle frame/support beams.

History
19th century
In 1885, W. C. Bradley began working as a clerk for Bussey-Goldsmith, a cotton factoring firm. Within a few years, he and his brother-in-law Samuel A. Carter purchased the cotton factoring business, changing the name to Carter and Bradley. The company soon expanded by adding a wholesale grocery department and began to manufacture a high grade fertilizer for the farmers who grew cotton.
In 1895, Bradley bought his brother-in-law's share of the business, and changed the name of the company to the W. C. Bradley Co. Over the next five years Bradley bought Eagle and Phenix Mills and founded the Columbus Manufacturing Company, two of the largest textile mills in the South. He also built a large cotton warehouse, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and today houses the corporate and administrative offices of the W. C. Bradley Co., the W. C. Bradley Co. Museum, and the D. A. Turner Memorial Chapel.
20th century
In 1917, Bradley purchased five plantations located 45 miles (72 km) south of Columbus, along the Chattahoochee River. Today they form the base of the company's Farm Division with 4,000 acres (16 km2) of row crops including peanuts, soybeans, corn, and wheat, 30,000 acres (120 km2) of timber, and a modern scientific swine-handling facility producing over 10,000 hogs per year for market.
During the early 1920s, Bradley continued to diversify his holdings. He acquired the Hamburger Cotton Mills and renamed them Bradley Manufacturing Company. In 1925, the W. C. Bradley Co. acquired control of the Columbus Iron Works. The Iron Works, dating back to 1849, had manufactured cannons and cannon balls as well as gunboats for the Confederacy during the American Civil War, and in 1872 the world's first commercial ice machines. When Bradley took over ownership, the Iron Works began manufacturing circulating heaters and stoves as well as horse-drawn farm implements.
The textile mills were sold during the 1940s. Upon W. C. Bradley's death on July 26, 1947, his son-in-law D. A. Turner became Chairman of the Board.
In 1949, the Iron Works manufactured its first cast iron barbecue grill. Gas grills were added in the 1960s. In 1973, the Manufacturing Division moved from the Columbus Iron Works to a new modern plant in Bradley Industrial Park. This division became known as W. C. Bradley Enterprises in 1977, and is now known as Char-Broil.
D.A. Turner died on August 11, 1982, and his son, William B. Turner assumed the title of Chairman. William B. Turner had been actively managing the company since he became Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1973.
On August 4, 1987, William B. Turner stepped down as Chairman and turned the management of the company over to the fourth generation of the founder's family. This new W. C. Bradley Co. executive team included Stephen Turner Butler as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and William B. Turner, Jr. as President and Chief Operating officer.
Lamplight in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, was purchased and added to the W. C. Bradley Co. Home Leisure Group in 1998. Lamplight is a producer of indoor lamps and oil, scented indoor candles, and decorative outdoor natural flame products. These products are marketed under the Lamplight and Tiki brands.
21st century
Zebco, headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma was acquired by the W. C. Bradley Co. in 2001. Zebco is a designer and marketer of branded fishing tackle in North America. The brands marketed by this division include Zebco, Rhino, Quantum, Lew, and Martin.
In 2005 it was announced that Char-Broil...(and so on)

(Redirected from Brake (railway))
Brakes are used on the vehicles of railway trains to slow them, or to keep them standing when parked. While the principle is familiar from road vehicle usage, operational features are more complex because of the need to control trains, i.e. multiple vehicles running together, and to be effective on vehicles left without a prime mover.

Early days
In the earliest days of railways, braking technology was primitive. The first trains had brakes operative on the locomotive tender and on vehicles in the train, where orters or, in the United States brakemen, travelling for the purpose on those vehicles operated the brakes. Some railways fitted a special deep-noted brake whistle to locomotives to indicate to the porters the necessity to apply the brakes. All the brakes at this stage of development were applied by operation of a screw and linkage to brake blocks applied to wheel treads, and these brakes could be used when vehicles were parked. In the earliest times, the porters travelled in crude shelters outside the vehicles, but ssistant guards who travelled inside passenger vehicles, and who had access to a brake wheel at their posts supplanted them.
The braking effort achievable was limited, and an early development was the application of a steam brake to locomotives, where boiler pressure could be applied to brake blocks on the locomotive wheels.
As train speeds increased, it became essential to provide some more powerful braking system capable of instant application and release by the train driver, described as a continuous brake because it would be effective continuously along the length of the train.
However there was no clear technical solution to the problem, because of the necessity of achieving a reasonably uniform rate of braking effort throughout a train, and because of the necessity to add and remove vehicles from the train at frequent points on the journey. (At these dates, unit trains were a rarity).
The chief types of solution were:
The chain brake, such as the Heberlein brake, in which a chain was connected continuously along the train.
When pulled tight it activated a friction clutch that used the rotation of the wheels to tighten a brake system at that point; this system has severe limitations in length of train capable of being handled, and of achieving good adjustment.
The simple vacuum system. An ejector on the locomotive created a vacuum in a continuous pipe along the train, and the vacuum operated brake cylinders on every vehicle. This system was very cheap and effective, but it had the major weakness that it became inoperative if the train became divided or if the train pipe was ruptured.
The automatic vacuum brake. This system was similar to the simple vacuum system, except that the creation of vacuum in the train pipe exhausted vacuum reservoirs on every vehicle and released the brakes. If the driver applied the brake, his driver's brake valve admitted atmospheric air to the train pipe, and this atmospheric pressure applied the brakes against the vacuum in the vacuum reservoirs. Being an automatic brake, this system applies braking effort if the train becomes divided or if the train pipe is ruptured. Its disadvantage is that the large vacuum reservoirs were required on every vehicle, and their bulk and the rather complex mechanisms were seen as objectionable.

Rotair Valve Westinghouse Air brake Company
The Westinghouse air brake system. In this system, air reservoirs are provided on every vehicle and the locomotive charges the train pipe with a positive air pressure, which releases the vehicle brakes and charges the air reservoirs on the vehicles. If the driver applies the brakes, his brake valve releases air from the train pipe, and triple valves at each vehicle detect the pressure loss and admit air from the air reservoirs to brake cylinders, applying the brakes. The Westinghouse system uses smaller air reservoirs and brake cylinders than the corresponding vacuum equipment, because a moderately high air pressure can be used. However an air compressor is required to generate the compressed air and in the earlier days of railways, this required a large reciprocating steam air compressor, and this was regarded by many engineers as highly undesirable.
Note: there are a number of variants and developments of all these systems.
Later British practice
In British practice, only passenger trains were fitted with...(and so on)

Natalie Kalmus (n Dunfee or Dunphy) (April 7, 1882, Houlton, Maine November 15, 1965, Boston, Massachusetts), was credited as the "color supervisor" of virtually all Technicolor features made from 1934 to 1949. She was the wife of Technicolor founder Herbert T. Kalmus from July 23, 1902 to June 22, 1922, although they continued to live together until 1944.
Originally a catalog model, then an art student, Kalmus made sure sure that costumes, sets and lighting were adjusted for the camera's sensitivities. She was generally regarded as a nuisance, but her services were contractually part of Technicolor's services. In her attempts to keep colors from being rendered improperly onscreen, she was accused of going to the other extreme of mildness. She wrote: "A super-abundance of color is unnatural, and has a most unpleasant effect not only upon the eye itself, but upon the mind as well." She recommended "the judicious use of neutrals" as a "foil for color" in order to lend "power and interest to the touches of color in a scene." Producer David O. Selznick complained in a memo during the making of Gone with the Wind:
[The] technicolor experts have been up to their old tricks of putting all sorts of obstacles in the way of real beauty. . . . We should have learned by now to take with a pound of salt much of what is said to us by the technicolor experts. . . . I have tried for three years now to hammer into this organization that the technicolor experts are for the purpose of guiding us technically on the [film] stock and not for the purpose of dominating the creative side of our pictures as to sets, costumes, or anything else. . . . If we are not going to go in for lovely combinations of set and costume and really take advantage of the full variety of colors available to us, we might just as well have made the picture in black and white. It would be a sad thing indeed if a great artist had all violent colors taken off his palette for fear that he would use them so clashingly as to make a beautiful painting impossible.
Director Vincente Minnelli recalled of making Meet Me in St. Louis, "My juxtaposition of color had been highly praised on the stage, but I couldn't do anything right in Mrs. Kalmus's eyes." Director Allan Dwan was more blunt: "Natalie Kalmus was a bitch."
Her association with Technicolor was severed in 1948 when she named the corporation as a co-defendant in an alimony suit against Herbert Kalmus, when it appeared he was about to remarry. She sued unsuccessfully for separate maintenance and half his assets of Technicolor, Inc. In the early 1950s she licensed her name for a line of designer television cabinets made by a California manufacturer. Her personal papers are now in the Margaret Herrick Library at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Plot
The story concerns Mario and Luigi, two Italian American plumber brothers living in Brooklyn, New York who are being driven out of business by the mafia-like Scapelli Construction Company. Mario is the eldest of the two, being close to the late 40's, and Luigi is about in his early-mid 20's. Luigi falls in love with an orphaned college student, Daisy, who is digging under the Brooklyn Bridge for dinosaur bones. After a date, she takes Luigi to the dig and witnesses Scapelli's men (who, along with Scapelli himself, had previously threatened her to end her research on that specific piece of land for their own interests) sabotage it by leaving the water-pipes open. Luigi tries to stop it but he is only a apprentice to Mario and doesn't know what to do. They rush back to his apartment where they inform Mario about the incident. The three go back to the flooding and the Mario Bros. manage to fix it but are knocked out by two strange characters, Iggy and Spike. The two crooks kidnap Daisy.
Mario and Luigi awake a few minutes later and head deeper into the caves following Daisy's screaming and discover an interdimensional portal through which Mario and Luigi follow Daisy. They find themselves in a strange dystopian parallel world where a human-like race evolved from Dinosaurs rather than the mammalian ancestry of true humans. 65 million years ago a meteorite crashed into the Earth and in doing so ripped the universe into two parallel dimensions. All the living dinosaurs of the time crossed over into this new realm before being sealed there forever. Iggy and Spike turn out to be lackeys (and cousins) of the other world's germophobic and obsessive dictator, King Bowser Koopa, descended from the T-Rex. However, the two have failed to also bring Daisy's rock, a meteorite fragment which Koopa is trying to get in order to merge his world with the real world that separated from Koopa's world during the meteor strike. It turns out that Daisy is the princess of the other dimension but when Koopa overthrew Daisy's father (and turned him into fungus), Daisy's mother took her to New York using the interdimensional portal. The portal was then destroyed, but when Scapelli was blasting at the cave, the portal was reopened. When Koopa hears about the re-opening of the portal, he sends Spike and Iggy to find Daisy and the rock in order to merge the dimensions and make Koopa dictator of both worlds. Spike and Iggy, however, who had grown more intelligent after being subjected to one of Koopa's experiments, decide to turn on Koopa and join forces with Mario and Luigi. Koopa thinks only Daisy can merge the worlds. It turns out Mario and Luigi were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Lucky for Daisy, the plumbers were persistent in finding her.
During the big finale, the worlds merge, during which Scapelli gets his comeuppance when Koopa devolves him into a primate by mistake while aiming for Mario, but Luigi and Daisy take back the rock and the worlds separate. Mario gains his heroic courage and fights Koopa and eventually wins when he and Luigi devolve him, making him a Tyrannosaurus....(and so on)

(Redirected from Ludlow Massacre)
The Ludlow massacre refers to the violent deaths of 20 people, 11 of them children, during an attack by the Colorado National Guard on a tent colony of 1,200 striking coal miners and their families at Ludlow, Colorado in the U.S. on April 20, 1914. These deaths occurred after a day-long fight between strikers and the Guard. Two women, eleven children, six miners and union officials and one National Guardsman were killed. In response, the miners armed themselves and attacked dozens of mines, destroying property and engaging in several skirmishes with the Colorado National Guard.

Ludlow massacre monument
This was the bloodiest event in the 14-month 1913-1914 southern Colorado Coal Strike. The strike was organized by the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) against coal mining companies in Colorado. The three biggest mining companies were the Rockefeller family-owned Colorado Fuel & Iron Company (CF&I), the Rocky Mountain Fuel Company (RMF), and the Victor-American Fuel Company (VAF). Ludlow, located 12 miles (19 km) northwest of Trinidad, Colorado, is now a ghost town. The massacre site is owned by the UMWA, which erected a granite monument, in memory of the striking miners and their families who died that day.

Background
Mining firms had long been able to attract low-skill labor, in spite of modest wages and stiff cost-cutting policies designed to maintain profits in a competitive industry. This made conditions in the mines difficult and often dangerous for the workers, and the sector became a ripe target for union organizers. Colorado miners had attempted to periodically unionize since the state's first strike in 1883.
The Western Federation of Miners organized primarily hard rock miners in the gold and silver camps during the 1890s. Beginning in 1900, the UMWA began organizing coal miners in the western states, including southern Colorado. The UMWA decided to focus on the CF&I because of the company's harsh management tactics under the conservative and distant Rockefellers and other investors. As part of their campaign to break or prevent strikes, the coal companies had lured immigrants, mainly from southern and Eastern Europe and Mexico. CF&I's management purposely mixed immigrants of different nationalities in the mines to discourage communication that might lead to organization.
As was typical in the industry of that day, miners were paid by tons of coal mined and not reimbursed for "dead work," such as laying rails, timbering, and shoring the mines to make them operable. Given the intense pressure to produce, mine safety was often given short shrift. More than 1,700 miners died in Colorado from 1884 to 1912, a rate that was between 2 and 3.5 times the national average during those years. Furthermore, the miners felt they were being short-changed on the weight of the coal they mined, arguing that the scales used for paying them were different from those used for coal customers. Miners challenging the weights risked being dismissed.
Most miners also lived in "company towns," where homes, schools, doctors, clergy, and law enforcement were provided by the company, as well as stores offering a full range of goods that could be paid for in company currency, scrip. However, this became an oppressive environment in which law focused on enforcement of increasing prohibitions on speech or assembly by the miners to discourage union-building activity. Also, under pressure to maintain profitability, the mining companies steadily reduced their investment in the town and its amenities while increasing prices at the company store so that miners and their families experienced worsening conditions and higher costs. Colorado's legislature had passed laws to improve the condition of the mines and towns, including the outlawing of the use of scrip, but these laws were poorly enforced.
The mine strike

A group of Ludlow strikers in front of their tent colony.

Armored car, known to the striking miners as the "Death Special"
Despite attempts to suppress union activity, secret organizing continued by the UMWA in the years leading up to 1913. Once everything had been laid out according to their plan, the UMWA presented, on behalf of coal miners, a list of seven demands:
Recognition of the union as bargaining agent
An increase in tonnage rates (equivalent to a 10% wage increase)
Enforcement of the eight-hour work day law
Payment for "dead work" (laying track, timbering, handling impurities, etc.)
Weight-checkmen elected by the workers (to keep company weightmen honest)...(and so on)

Layout and Floorplan
The original Mall based on a Y shaped layout was opened in 1995 and had five levels. The extended plan as of 2006 includes a Carrefour hypermarket in a building on the other side of a small road with a multistory car park building alongside it and a detached mosque. The Hypermarket and the car park building are connected to an extension of the original mall by a large bridge with shops in the second and third floor. This extension is build alongside the right side of the original "Y". It alone rises with the bridge to a third floor of shops, while the top of the Carrefour building consists of furnished apartments.
The public parts of the partly subterranean "Ground Floor 1" of the original "Y" contain a car park, a "Youngsters entertainment Center" with a Go-Kart arena and shops including a Spa for Ladies in its immediate extension.
The ground floor has a bank and a restaurant under the Carrefour with the rest left as car park. The main building with its extension offer all their space to shops arranged along a system of parallel ways in the branches of the "Y" in the old part and along the outer walls of the new extension. The old part has a stairwell and a large court with a fountain while the new extension has three stairwells which also serve for daylighting the mall under tent like roofs. The basic anchor shops on this level are four or more family and ladies fashion shops. While the more than forty fashion shops take up for most of the space on this level, the second largest group with more than thirty mostly smaller shops is made up of gold, jewelry and watch shops.
The first floor has a furniture store and a large jewellery store (Paris Gallery) as anchor stores in the extension, while the anchors of the old part are two department stores, a fashion store, an electronic store and an outlet of a well known book store chain.
The second floor contains the Carrefour on the whole level of its building. In the new extension a large perfume and cosmetics department (Paris Gallery) and maybe some family fashion stores function as anchor stores. Besides mosque areas this level is mainly dedicated to restaurants, coffee shops and fast meals sections in the old part of the building.
The third floor has a large family entertainment center called "Fun Oasis" similar to a theme park. while the rest is dedicated to more restaurants, snack shops and other eating facilities.
Building
The mall was designed and built by the Al-Rashid Trading & Contracting CO. LTD. which won a certificate of merit for designing the mall from The International Council of Shopping Centers ( ICSC ).
Fountains
The mall sports 3 very beautiful fountains. There are the following fountains:-
1. One with fire in the middle which is displayed at around 8:30pm to 10:00pm daily.
2. There is another one which has water coming out from different places and the water even intersects the other streams in the middle of the air.
3. And the last one which is present in the new area, has artificial rocks and gives a small view of waterfall and also every once in a while the water comes out and goes almost 3 floors above the ground. It can be seen from any floor and is really high.

Site Plan Proposal
Twin Towers 2
Each tower will have a redesigned facade that mimics the same upward flow of columns that the original twin towers had; however the windows will be much larger at 40 inches wide. Each tower will be 500 meters (1515 ft) tall at roof level, nearly 100metres (330ft) taller than the originals. The lobbies will be 6 stories tall and have an onyx-clad elevator core and a recreated balcony. The towers will have a "triple tube design", the first tube being the outer wall/skin, the second tube being the core wall itself, and the third tube being the inner core of the building. This allows for column free floor space and a much stronger structure. The first 60 floors will be office space. The 67th floor sky lobby will open onto a skypark at the bottom of a huge atrium inside the the core of the building. Around the atrium would be executive offices, residences and possibly shops and stores. The Atrium in the South Tower would be topped with a large skylight. The North tower atrium would be topped by a refurbished Windows on the World restaurant and on the roof of both towers would be observation decks and possible Top of the World indoor observation deck. The North Tower will have an ornamental spire with limited or no radio broadcasting devices, allowing people to climb spiral staircases to a small observation area inside the spire. The Towers will have fire relief floors, high capacity escape elevators and five much wider staircases.
Twin Towers 2 Memorials
The main block contains the towers and memorials of the September 11, 2001 attacks, one of which represents the South Tower and consists of a part of the original facade surrounding the Koenig Sphere and a ring of countries' flags who lost at least one citizen in the attacks. The South Tower memorial is similar and consists of a reconstructed facade surrounding a fountain and a ring of flags. In between the towers and the memorials will be the Garden of Inspiration and an above ground memorial with the names of the people lost in the attacks.
Twin Towers 2 Lower Buildings
Building 3 contains 96,000sqft (8,900m2) of trading floor space and an Opera House and Cultural Exchange Center at the top. WTC 3,4,5 will contain over 1,000,000square feet (93,000m2) of ground level retail space (not including the underground mall). WTC 6 is a hotel with a 12 story atrium and balconys with river views.

The original 16acres (65,000m2) World Trade Center site prior to 9/11.
This is the selected siteplan that is shown on the models.

Location of Lions' Gate Bridge in Vancouver
Lions' Gate Bridge, officially known as the First Narrows Bridge, is a suspension bridge that crosses the first narrows of Burrard Inlet and connects the City of Vancouver, British Columbia, to the North Shore municipalities of the District of North Vancouver, the City of North Vancouver, and West Vancouver. The term "Lions' Gate" reflects the Lions, a pair of mountain peaks north of Vancouver.
The total length of the bridge including the north viaduct is 1,823 metres (5,890 feet). The length including approach spans is 1,517.3m (4,978ft), the main span alone is 473m (1,550ft), the tower height is 111m (364ft), and it has a ship's clearance of 61m (200ft). Prospect Point in Stanley Park offered a good high south end to the bridge, but the low flat delta land to the north required construction of the extensive North Viaduct.
The bridge has three reversible lanes, the use of which is indicated by signals. The centre lane changes direction to accommodate for traffic patterns. The traffic volume on the bridge is 60,000 - 70,000 vehicles per day. Trucks exceeding 13 tonnes (14.3 tons) are prohibited, as are vehicles using studded tires.
The bridge forms part of Highways 99 and 1A.

Lions' Gate Bridge under construction
Starting about 1890, bridge builders foresaw the possibility that a bridge across the first narrows would open up. There were a number who argued against its construction, as many felt it would ruin Stanley Park or cause problems for the busy seaport or that it would take toll revenue away from the Second Narrows Bridge. However, many others saw it as necessary in order to open up development on the North Shore and it was felt that these problems could be overcome. The decision was put to the electorate of Vancouver in 1927, but the first plebiscite was defeated and the idea was put to rest for a short while.
Alfred James Towle Taylor, who had been part of this proposal and still owned the provincial franchise to build the bridge, did not have the finances to purchase the necessary large sections of property in North Vancouver and West Vancouver. However, he was able to convince the Guinness family (of the Irish beer fame) to invest in the land on the north shore of Burrard Inlet. They purchased 4,700 acres (16 km2) of West Vancouver mountainside through a syndicate called British Pacific Properties Ltd.
On December 13, 1933, a second plebiscite was held and this time, it was passed by a 2 to 1 margin. After considerable further negotiations with the federal government, approval was finally granted, with the requirement that Vancouver materials and workmen be used as much as possible to provide employment during the Great Depression.
The bridge was designed by the Montreal firm Monsarrat and Pratley, which was later responsible for the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge in Halifax, Nova Scotia using a similar design. Other companies involved in the construction of the bridge include: Swan Wooster Engineering, Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas, Rowan Williams Davies & Irwin Inc., Canron Western Constructors, Dominion Bridge Company, , American Bridge Company, .

Lions' Gate Bridge as seen from the air.
Construction began on March 31, 1937. After one and a half years and a cost of $5,873,837.17 (CAD), it opened to traffic on November 14, 1938. On May 29, 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth presided over the official opening during a royal visit to Canada. A toll of 25 cents was charged for each car. On January 20, 1955, the Guinness family sold the bridge to the province for $5,959,060, and in 1963, the tolls were dropped.
The bridge was originally constructed as a two-lane bridge, but when traffic increased, the road was repainted to create a third lane, which was originally a passing lane. Eventually overhead lane control signals were installed, enabling traffic in the centre lane to be directed in either direction.
In 1975, the deteriorating north viaduct was replaced with a lighter, wider, and stronger steel deck with wider lanes. This was carried out in sections using a series of short closures of the bridge; each...(and so on)

Looking backwards at Turn 2
The thirty-first annual Winchester 400 motor race (run yearly since 1970) was held under American Speed Association sanction on October 1, 2000, at the Winchester Speedway, Indiana (USA).
As a child, Gary St. Amant dreamed of winning the historic Winchester 400. Dominating the final stages of the event, St. Amant earned his first "400" victory and also clinched the Series Championship. It was the return o the American Speed Association to the legendary event for the first time since Glenn Allen Jr. won the 1991 event.

Larry Foyt was the quickest of the 38 cars that attempted to earn a spot in the starting field. Driving his Harrah Pontiac, he toured the oval in 15.656 seconds (114-972 MPH), establishing a modern ASA track record. Foyt would go from the pole to lead the first 43 laps until a majority of the field made pit stops under a yellow flag. Greg Stewart stayed on the track and assumed the lead until lap 83 when David Stremme made his first-ever appearance at the top of the 400 leader board. On track action and pit stops saw the lead shuffled several times over the first half of the race with Ricky Johnson, Mike Garvey, Scott Wimmer, and Joey Clanton all having a turn at the front.
In his first appearance at the intimidating oval, short-track veteran Mike Miller started showing his hand in the middle stages of the event. He first moved into the lead on the 196th lap, when he elected to stay on the track while others pitted for tires. Miller and Garvey swapped the lead on several occasions, before the last round of pit stops set the stage for the conclusion of the race. St. Amant crew performed lightning fast pit work, beating out Tim Sauter, while a slow stop relegated M. Miller to the tail of the lead lap cars. St. Amant was able to hold off all challengers over the final 70 laps and led T. Sauter by 0.680 seconds at the drop of the checkers. Robbie Pyle crossed the line in third with M. Miller fourth, and two-time winner Butch Miller in fifth. The top-five along with sixth place R. Johnson all completed the 400-lap distance. St. Amant grabbed a record $18,700 for his win.

A belt-driven bicycle is a bicycle that uses a toothed rubber synchronous belt to transmit power from the pedals to the wheel. The belts are typically made by the same manufacturing companies that produce timing belts for automobiles, machineries, and other synchronous belt drive applications.
The application of belt drives to bicycles is growing, especially in the commuter bicycle market, due to the low maintenance and grease-free benefits.

//
Benefits
Lubrication is not required.
Smoother operation. A belt's teeth completely engage into the system for decreased friction and pedalling efficiency.
Longer life than bicycle chains.
Some belt systems are more lightweight than conventional chains.
Belts do not rust.
Belt systems are more resistant to debris than chain drives.
Belt systems are quieter than chain.
No maintenance.
Disadvantages
Scarcer at shops than bicycles with conventional chain.
Belt-driven bicycles often incorporate proprietary plastic gears, which wear out more quickly than metal. Specially designed lightweight metal sprockets are available on some models and in kits.
Derailleurs can't be used, so an internal-gear hub is used for shifting.
One can't retrofit most existing bike frames with regular drives to accommodate belt drives, as the frame must have an opening in the rear triangle or an elevated chain stay.
History
In 1984 and 1985, Mark Sanders, a designer who had earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College, London, designed a folding bicycle as part of his graduate studies in an Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) program. The program was run jointly by Imperial College and the Royal College of Art in London. He collaborated with a design engineer from Gates Corporation to outfit his bicycle with a belt, rather than a chain.
When his project was complete, Sanders chose entrepreneur and former Greg Norman manager James Marshall and a Glasgow manufacturer to turn his award-winning design into a product. The manufacturer coined the name STRiDA, and in 1987 the bicycle began rolling off the production line. In 2002 production was moved to Taiwanese manufacturer Ming Cycle in order to meet increased demand, and as of 2007, Ming Cycle fully owned the STRiDA brand and intellectual property rights.
iXi bicycles, distributed in the United States by Delta Cycle Corporation, followed in 2004 with a compact design that, like STRiDA, featured a grease-free belt drive.
Possibilities for belt-driven bicycles have widened as hub gears inside the rear hub, were applied. In lieu of a derailleur, the hub gear allows riders of belt-driven bicycles to shift easily. Major internal hub makers include Shimano (Nexus) and SRAM.
In 2007, Gates Corporation developed a high-modulus synchronous belt and sprocket system called the Carbon Drive System?. The belt pitch allowed for lower tension requirements to help prevent skipping. Lightweight, patent-pending sprockets have Mud Ports?, openings under each tooth, which work to slough off debris. Early adopters who helped evaluate, revise and introduce this system included Frank Scurlock of Spot Brand Bicycles and Kalle Nicolai of Nicolai Ltd.
Early in the 21st century an increasing number of bicycle companies, including Trek, offer belt-driven bicycles.

54mm Toy Soldiers by Imperial Productions of New Zealand
A toy soldier is a miniature figurine that represents a soldier. The term applies to depictions of uniformed military personnel from all eras, and includes knights, cowboys, pirates, and other subjects that involve combat-related themes. Toy soldiers vary from simple playthings to highly realistic and detailed models. The latter are of more recent development and are sometimes called model figures to distinguish them from traditional toy soldiers. Larger scale toys such as dolls and action figures may come in military uniforms, but they are not generally considered toy soldiers.
Toy soldiers are made from all types of material, but the most common mass produced varieties are metal and plastic. There are many different kinds of toy soldiers, including tin soldiers or flats, hollow cast metal figures, composition figures, and plastic army men. Toy soldiers are traditionally sold in sets, but modern, collectible figures are often sold individually.

Scale
Scale for toy soldiers is expressed as the soldier's approximate height from head to foot in millimeters. Because many figures do not stand up straight, height is usually an approximation. Standard toy soldier scale, originally adopted by W. Britain, is 54 mm (2.25 inches) or 1:32 scale. Among different manufacturers, standard scale may range from 50 mm or 1:35 scale, to 60 mm or 1:28 scale. For gamers and miniatures enthusiasts, 25 mm and even smaller scales are available. On the larger end of the scale are American Dimestore figures, and many of the toy soldiers produced in Germany, which are approximately 75 mm (3 inches) or 1:24 scale.
History
Military figures have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs, and have appeared in many cultures and eras. Tin soldiers were produced in Germany as early as the 1730s, by molding the metal between two pieces of slate. Toy soldiers became widespread during the 18th century, inspired by the military exploits of Frederick the Great. Miniature soldiers were also used in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries by military strategists to plan battle tactics by using the figures to show the locations of real soldiers. In 1893, William Britain revolutionized the production of toy soldiers by devising the method of hollow casting, making soldiers that were cheaper and lighter than their German counterparts.

Vintage plastic Trojan War figure by Herald
In addition to Britains, there have been many other manufacturers of toy soldiers over the years. For example, John Hill & Company produced hollow cast lead figures in the same style and scale. Companies such as Elastolin and Lineol were well known for their composite figures made of glue and sawdust that included both military and civilian subjects. After 1950, rising production costs and concerns about lead poisoning led to greater numbers of plastic toy soldiers. The first American plastic soldiers were made by Beton as early as 1937.
One large historical producer in plastic was Louis Marx and Company, which produced both realistic soldiers of great detail and also historical collections of plastic men and women, including the "Presidents of the United States" collection, "Warriors of the World", "Generals of World War II", "Jesus and the Apostles", and figures from the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Marx also produced boxed playsets that featured many famous battles with armies of two sides, character figures, and terrain features. Britains produced plastic figures under the brand names of Herald and Deetail. Also in England, the scale model company, Airfix produced a variety of high quality plastic sets, which were frequently painted by hobbyists. Many Airfix figures were imitated by other companies and reproduced as inexpensive, bagged plastic army men.
During the 1990s, the production of metal toy-grade painted figures and connoisseur-grade painted toy soldiers increased to serve the demands of the collectors' market. The style of many of these figures shifted from the traditional gloss-coat enamel paint to the matte-finished acrylic paint, which allows for greater detail and historical accuracy. The change was largely inspired by the introduction of very high quality painted figures from St. Petersburg, Russia.
Collecting
There is a substantial hobby devoted to collecting both old and new toy soldiers, with an abundance of small manufacturers, dealers, and toy soldier shows. There are even specialty magazines devoted to the hobby, such as Toy Soldier and Model Figure. Collectors often specialize in a particular type of soldier or historical period, though some people enjoy collecting many...(and so on)

The Screwdriver is the second animated cartoon short subject in the Woody Woodpecker series. Released theatrically on August 11, 1941, the film was produced by Walter Lantz Productions and distributed by Universal Pictures.
Notes
Like most of the early 1940s Lantz "cartunes", The Screwdriver carried no director's credit. Lantz himself has claimed to have directed this film, which features animation by Alex Lovy and Ralph Somerville, a story by Ben Hardaway and Jack Cosgriff, and music by Darrell Calker.
The song, performed by Mel Blanc at the beginning of the film, would make a reappearance in Hot Rod Huckster, performed by Grace Stafford.
Everybody thinks I'm screwy!
Screwy as a loon, that's me!
When I get on the driving spree,
The coppers all get panicky!
Honk my horn!
HONKHONKHONK
Strip my gears!
SCREECHSCHREECHSCREECH
So I'm screwy, what, what, what can I do?
I ask you!

Eddie Deezan as Waldo
Tim Conway as Dorf
Michelle Smith as Boom Boom, the Angel of Numbers
Characters
Derk Dorf is the main character and the voice-over. He is playing a game of golf when, apparently, a voice over commands what he does. For example, the voice over said for Dorf to keep his left elbow in, and he did and sliced it just as the voice-over said. Apparently Dorf re-enacts whatever the Golf bible commandments are.
Waldo is Dorf's caddy. He first arrives late and does not know the terms of Golf. He also can distract or annoy Dorf whenever he is trying to golf. For example, Dorf asks for a tee, Waldo gives him a cup of hot tea.
Boom Boom is the Angel of numbers. She gives out the commandments as the voice-over calls them out. She puts roman numerals on a stone that has been flattened for her to put them on.
Props
Target - Dorf used a target to pretend that he was in the U.S. Open Golf Tournament. Apparently, he broke his neighbor's window by hitting the ball over the fence.
Sandwich - Dorf asked for a Sand Wedge, apparently he got a sandwich to hit the ball out of the sand.
Motorized Putter - Dorf used a motorized putter to putt the ball to the hole. Apparently, it backfired on him.
Puns and Jokes
Injuries There have been many bad things that have happened to him. One is the ball hitting his head. When he stole somebody's 9-iron he hit it to a tree and it hit him back in the head with the same sound effect. Another joke was when he was hit by the brick when he was hitting the target pretending to be in the U.S. Open.
Dorf's wife - Dorf's wife is constantly bothered that Dorf is spending too much time playing Golf and not speding time with her. Dorf usually calls her a name such as "My honey bucket, my sweetie pie, my darlin' lump of loveliness." Apparently when she's not listening, Dorf will talk behind her back.

Canadian Silver Maple Leaf

The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf is a series of silver bullion coins issued by Canada. It has a static design every year and mostly comes in 1 troy oz of silver. Variation for this coin includes proof (1989 only), privy marks, coloured maple leaf (has a different design than regular maple leaf) and holographic enhancement (5 Coin Set 1 oz, ? oz, ? oz, 1/10 oz, 1/20 oz). A single-issue 10 oz version was produced in 1998 to mark the 10th anniversary of the coin series. The face value of the 1 oz coin is 5 Canadian Dollars, the highest among other silver bullions. During the month of February, 2008, the market value of the coin was approximately 20 Canadian dollars. The purity of the coin is 99.99% silver, also the highest among other bullions which have a 99.90% standard. The program started in 1988 and is on-going today.
In 1999, all Silver Maple Leaf coins that were issued came with a Privy Mark to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Maple Leaf program. The following year, all coins for the year 2000 featured a Privy Mark with Fireworks and the number 2000. Another Silver Maple Leaf was issued to commemorate the Millennium. These coins were produced for January 1, 2000 and the Privy Mark consisted of Fireworks as well. The coins were double dated 1999 and 2000. The coin is struck by the Royal Canadian Mint.
According to the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins (62nd edition, 2007), standard Silver Maple Leafs differ from their Gold and Platinum counterparts in generating collector demand, with the 1996 and 1997 mintings in particular fetching higher prices due to limited pressings (for example, just under 101,000 for the 1997 Maple Leaf compared with more than 1.2 million pressed of the 1999 edition).
some of the privy mark maple leaf were stock only in Europe.

The obverse of a 1989 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf with the young Queen Elizabeth.
Obverse: The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. There are three different versions, a young head version, an old head version, and an older head version. The year of issue and the face value of 5 dollars is also displayed on this side.
Reverse: Picture of a maple leaf. On some variations there are also a small privy mark on the lower half of the coin or colour enhancement
There is also a Gold Maple Leaf series issued in the same design as the silver one.

(Redirected from Cold Water Pitting of Copper Tube)
Cold water pitting of copper tube occurs in only a minority of installations. Copper water tubes are usually guaranteed by the manufacturer against manufacturing defects for a period of 50 years. The vast majority of copper systems far exceed this time period but a small minority may fail after a comparatively short time.
The majority of failures seen are the result of poor installation or operation of the water system. The most common failure seen in the last 20 years is Pitting corrosion in cold water tubes, also known as Type 1 pitting. See also Erosion Corrosion of Copper Water Tubes. These failures are usually the result of poor commissioning practice although a significant number are initiated by flux left in the bore after assembly of soldered joints. Prior to about 1970 the most common cause of Type 1 pitting was carbon films left in the bore by the manufacturing process.
Research and manufacturing improvements in the 1960's virtually eliminated carbon as a cause of pitting with the introduction of a clause in the 1971 edition of BS 2871 requiring tube bores to be free of deleterious films. Despite this, carbon is still regularly blamed for tube failures without proper investigation.

Copper water tubes
Copper tubes have been used to distribute potable water within building for many years and hundreds of miles are installed throughout Europe every year. The long life of copper when exposed to natural waters is a result of its thermodynamic stability, its high resistance to reacting with the environment, and the formation of insoluble corrosion products that insulate the metal from the environment. The corrosion rate of copper in most potable waters is less than 25 ?m/year, at this rate a 15 mm tube with a wall thickness of 0.7 mm would last for about 280 years . In some soft waters the general corrosion rate may increase to 125 ?m/year, but even at this rate it would take over 50 years to perforate the same tube. Despite the reliability of copper and copper alloys, in some cold hard waters pits may form in the bore of a tube. If these pits form, failure times can be expected between 6 months and 2 years from initiation. The mechanism that leads to the pitting of copper in cold hard waters is complex, it requires a water with a specific chemistry that is capable of supporting pit growth and a mechanism for the initiation of the pits.
Pitting
The pits that penetrate the bore are usually covered in a hard pale green nodule of calcium carbonate. If the nodule is removed a hemispherical pit is revealed filled with coarse crystals of red cuprous oxide and green cuprous chloride. The pits are often referred to as Type 1 pits and the form of attack as Type 1 pitting.
Water
The characteristics capable of supporting Type 1 pits were determined empirically by Lucey after examining the compositions of waters in which the pitting behaviour was known . They should be cold, less that 30, hard or moderately hard, 170 to 300 mg/l carbonate hardness, and organically pure. Organically pure waters usually originate from deep wells, or boreholes. Surface waters from rivers or lakes contain naturally occurring organic compounds that inhibit the formation of Type 1 pits, unless a deflocculation treatment has been carried out that removes organic material. Type 1 pitting is relatively uncommon in North America and this may be a result of the lower population density allowing a significant proportion of the potable water to be obtained from surface derived sources. In addition to being cold hard and organically pure, the water needs a specific chemistry. The effect of the water chemistry can be empirically determined though use of the Pitting Propensity Rating (PPR) a number that takes into account the sulfate, chloride, nitrate and sodium ion concentrations of the water as well as its acidity or pH. A water with a positive PPR has been shown to be capable of propagating Type 1 pits.
Initiation
Many waters in both the UK and Europe are capable of supporting Type 1 pitting but no problems will be experienced unless a pit is initiated in the wall of the tube. When a copper tube is initially filled with a hard water salts deposit on the wall and the copper slowly reacts with the water producing a thin protective layer of mixed corrosion products and hardness scale. If any pitting of the tube is to occur then this film must be locally disrupted. There are three mechanisms that allow the disruption of the protective deposits. The most well known, although now the least common, is the presence of carbon films on the bore. Stagnation and flux residues are the most...(and so on)

Site of the now demolished station and removed siding
Sleeps Hill was the location of a number of quarries which became the source of ballast stone for the South Australian Railways (SAR). From 1909, a branch line, parallel to the main line and the Clapham branch line, served the Sleeps Hill quarries. The branch became the second main line in 1915, and the quarries were worked by a back-shunt from Eden Hills. For a short time, from 1916, Sleeps Hill was the Southern limit of SAR suburban train workings, until the double track passed through the new tunnels to Eden Hills. The station platforms were relocated to the South of the quarry sidings in the 1940s, and removed when Lynton station was opened in the mid 1950's. Some of the foundations of the station buildings, the trees from the station gardens, some of the foundations of the quarry crushing plant, and evidence of the alignment of the spur lines and sidings are all that remain.
In 1995 the western track of the double broad gauge track was converted to standard gauge, and the eastern track was doubled to provide one of the four crossing points on the current Adelaide-Belair passenger service.
Crushing Plant

Quarry crushing plant foundations
The Department of Mines and Energy, and the City of Mitcham, have placed a sign-board with information on the history of the quarries and crushing plant:
"Two crushing plants, erected in the 1920s on either side of the valley, were connected by a siding to the railway. These concrete foundations are the remains of a larger plant. The crushed rock was used in roadmaking, concrete and building work, paths and bitumen.
Broken stone from the quarries was dumped into a storage bin and fed by gravity into a primary jaw crusher. Secondary crushing was done by a gyratory crusher. The material was elevated to screens, where it was graded and deposited into a bin divided into compartments for the various sizes.
Crushed material from the northern plant was carried to the storage bin by a conveyor belt supported on a trestle framework. All power was supplied by electric motors. Workshops for blacksmithing and fitting and two compressors, which supplied air via pipelines for rock drills at the quarries, were located nearby.
Official Inspector of Mines and Quarries reports indicate that safety standards in the plant were far removed from those of today. A mill hand was killed in a fall from the plant in 1932."

The Schweizer 300 (formerly Hughes 300) family of light utility helicopters was originally produced by Hughes Helicopters, as a development of the Hughes 269. Now manufactured by Schweizer Aircraft, a recent subsidiary of Sikorsky Aircraft, the basic design has been in production for almost 50 years. The single, three-bladed main rotor and piston-powered Schweizer 300 is mostly used as a cost-effective platform for training and agriculture. In February 2009, the 300C was rebranded as the Sikorsky S-300C.

Development
Background
In 1955, Hughes Tool Company's Aircraft Division carried out a market survey which showed that there was a demand for a low-cost, lightweight two-seat helicopter. The division began building the Model 269 in September 1955. The prototype flew on 2 October 1956, but it wasn't until 1960 that the decision was made to develop the helicopter for production.
On 9 April 1959, the 269 received certification from the FAA and Hughes continued to concentrate on civil production. With some design changes, deliveries of the Model 269A version began in 1961. By mid-1963 about 20 aircraft were being produced a month and by the spring of 1964, 314 had been built. Hughes had successfully captured a large portion of the civilian helicopter market with an aircraft that would prove itself popular in agriculture, police work and other duties.
Model 300

Schweizer 300C

Schweizer 300CB
In 1964, Hughes introduced the slightly-larger three-seat Model 269B which it marketed as the Hughes 300. That same year, the Hughes 269 set an endurance record of 101 hours. To set the record, two pilots took turns piloting the aircraft and hovered in ground-effect for fueling. To ensure no cheating, eggs were affixed to the bottom of the skid gear to register any record-ending landing.
The Hughes 300 was followed in 1969 by the improved Hughes 300C (sometimes 269C), which first flew on 6 March 1969 and received FAA certification in May 1970. This new model introduced a more powerful 190hp (140kW) Lycoming HIO-360-D1A engine and increased diameter rotor, giving a payload increase of 45%, plus overall performance improvements. It was this model that Schweizer began building under license from Hughes in 1983.
In 1986, Schweizer acquired all rights to the helicopter from McDonnell Douglas, who had purchased Hughes Helicopters in 1984. After Schweizer acquired the FAA Type Certificate, the helicopter was known for a short time as the Schweizer-Hughes 300C and then simply, the Schweizer 300C. The basic design remained unchanged over the years, despite Schweizer making over 250 minor improvements.
Derivatives
Between Hughes and Schweizer, and including foreign-licensed production civil and military training aircraft, nearly 3,000 units of the Model 269/300 have been built and flown over the last 50 years. Schweizer continued to develop the Model 300 by adding a turbine and redesigning the body to create the Schweizer 330. And then further developing the dynamic components to take greater advantage of the power of the turbine engine led to the development of the Schweizer S-333.
Schweizer was purchased on August 26, 2004, by Sikorsky Aircraft. The Schweizer 300 models fill a gap in the Sikorsky helicopter line, which is known for its medium and heavy utility and cargo helicopters.
Design
The Hughes 269 was created with a fully articulated, counter-clockwise rotating, three-bladed main rotor, and a two-bladed tail rotor that would remain as distinctive characteristics of all its variants. It also has shock absorber-dampened, skid-type landing gear. The flight controls are directly linked to the control surfaces of the helicopter so there are no hydraulics in the 269. There are generally two sets of controls, although this was optional on the civil 269A. For three-seat aircraft, the middle collective control stick is removable and a seat cushion can be put in its place for the third passenger. In the 300CB and 300CBi, the collective control can be repositioned to left-handed configuration for the Pilot In Command position (right seat).

Green Acres is an American television series starring Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor as a couple who move from New York City to a farm in the country. Produced by Filmways, Inc. as a sister show, and to plenty a spin-off, to Petticoat Junction, the series was originally broadcast on CBS from September 15, 1965 to April 27, 1971.

Background
After the success of The Beverly Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction, CBS offered producer Paul Henning another half-hour on the schedule with no pilot required. Lacking the time to commit to another project himself, he encouraged colleague Jay Sommers to create the series. Sommers used his 1950 radio series, Granby's Green Acres, as the basis for the new television series. The 13-episode radio series had starred Gale Gordon and Bea Benaderet (who also appeared in the TV version) as a big-city family who move to the country.
In pre-production, two proposed titles were Country Cousins and The Eddie Albert Show. Green Acres was about Oliver Wendell Douglas (Eddie Albert), an accomplished and erudite New York attorney who was acting on his lifelong dream to be a farmer, and Lisa Douglas (Eva Gabor), his glamorously bejeweled Hungarian wife, dragged unwillingly from the privileged city life she adored to a bucolic life on a ramshackle farm. The debut episode was a mock documentary about this big-city attorney's decision to move to a rural area, narrated by CBS newscaster John Charles Daly.
Ostensibly a reverse Beverly Hillbillies, after the first few episodes the series shifted from a run-of-the-mill rural comedy and developed an absurdist world of its own. Though there were still many episodes that were standard 1960s sitcom fare, the show became notable for its surreal aspects that frequently included satire. They also had an appeal to children for the slapstick, silliness and schtick, though adults were able to appreciate it on a different level.
It was set in the same universe as Henning's other rural television comedy Petticoat Junction, featuring such picturesque towns as Hooterville (miscalled "Hootersville" by Lisa), Pixley, Crabwell Corners and Stankwell Falls. As a spin-off, it at times shared some of the same characters. Sometimes Petticoat Junction folks, such as Joe Carson, Newt Kiley, and Floyd Smoot, are seen in "cross-over" episodes and vice versa.
Much of the humor of the series derived from the pragmatic yet short-fused Oliver attempting to make sense of the largely insane world around him. There seemed to be a dual perspective of reality: Oliver versus everyone else. The latter envelops the Hootervillians - and inexplicably Oliver's affluent mother (Eleanor Audley). Mother Douglas lampoons Oliver and mollifies Lisa. There were, however, times when it appeared that Oliver was not entirely sane either, such as when he rented a rooster (although this could be construed as just part of his naive city persona).
The dishonest and oily salesman Mr. Haney (Pat Buttram), who sold Oliver the Green Acres farm, continues to con his easy "mark" in most episodes. Haney, along with young, glib farmhand Eb Dawson (Tom Lester), scatterbrained county agent Hank Kimball (Alvy Moore), and grocer Sam Drucker (Frank Cady), make up the main supporting cast. Eb habitually addressed the Douglases as "Dad" and "Mom", much to Oliver's irritation.
Sam Drucker was a regular on both series. Petticoat Junction regular Betty-Jo Bradley appears in one episode in a short-lived romance with Eb Dawson. Bobbi-Jo appears in the same episode. Popular western film actor Smiley Burnette guested several times in the role of railway engineer Charley Pratt during the 1965 and 1966 seasons but Burnette's ill health ended the role.(
While general store owner Sam Drucker is a reliable Dutch uncle in Petticoat Junction, his character is bent a bit here (keeping plastic pickles in a barrel to appease city-folk). Drucker also serves as a newspaper printer/editor; volunteer fireman; constable; justice of the peace and a postmaster. As editor of the...(and so on)

A capacitance meter is a piece of electronic test equipment used to measure capacitors. Depending on the sophistication of the meter, it may simply display the capacitance or it may also measure a number of other parameters such as leakage, equivalent series resistance, and inductance.
Simple meters
Many DVMs (digital volt meters) also contain a capacitance-measuring function. These usually operate by charging and discharging the capacitor under test with a known current and measuring the rate of rise of the resulting voltage; the slower the rate of rise, the larger the capacitance. DVMs can usually measure capacitances in the range of nanofarads to a few hundred microfarads.
Bridges

An Andeen-Hagerling 2700A capacitance bridge
More sophisticated instruments use other techniques such as inserting the capacitor-under-test into a bridge circuit. By varying the values of the other legs in the bridge (so as to bring the bridge into balance), the value of the unknown capacitor is determined. The bridge usually can also measure the other parameters (series resistance and inductance) of interest to the electrical engineer. Through the use of Kelvin connections and other careful design techniques, these instruments can usually measure capacitors over a range extending from picofarads to farads. It's also common to find combined LCR meters that can measure all of: inductance, resistance, and capacitance.
It is also commonly possible to apply a DC bias voltage to the capacitor and measure the leakage current.
Modern instruments in this category usually include a digital display as well as some sort of Go/no go testing to allow simple automated use in a production environment. Beyond that, an IEEE-488 (GPIB) interface allows sophisticated computer control.

Acoustic Control Induction System

I had find many products about multi-functional control valve. multi-functional control valve It is roughly composed of valve body, float ball, regulating valve, filter, etc. It is used in the automatic water supply system of tank, pool, water tower, etc in mining industry, enterprises, high buildings. It is also used in circulating water supply system of atmospheric pressure boiler. When the water level reaches the pre-set line, the valve will close automatically; While the water level drops, the valve will open automatically to charge water. It is characterized by easy maintenance, sensitivity and duration, precise control the liquid level which is not interfered by water pressure, tight-closing without any leakage, the separation installation of float ball and main valve.

The ACIS/TVIS System
Acoustic Control Induction System, or ACIS, is an implementation of a Variable Length Intake Manifold system designed by Toyota.
Simply put, the ACIS system uses a single intake air control valve located in the intake to vary the length of the intake tract in order to optimize power and torque, as well as provide better fuel efficiency and reduce intake "roar"..
The ECU controls the position of the intake air control valve based on input signals from throttle angle and engine RPM. The vacuum switching valve (VSV) which controls the vacuum supply to the actuator is normally closed and passes vacuum to the actuator when it is energized by the ECU. By energizing the VSV vacuum is passed to the actuator, closing the air control valve. This effectively lengthens the intake manifold run. By de-energizing the VSV, vacuum to the actuator is blocked and trapped vacuum is bled off of the actuator diaphragm. Toyota ACIS is an On/Off system. The valve (or valves in newer models with multiple valves to create more than 2 lengths) is either fully opened or fully closed. An example of early single valve ACIS programming would be the 3.0L 3vz-fe engine. The ECU actuates the vsv to close the valve at a TPS (throttle position sensor) input of 60% or greater AND 3,900rpm or greater.
ACIS is NOT a gradual system.

Cork material is a prime-subset of generic cork tissue, harvested for commercial use primarily from the Cork Oak tree, Quercus suber, with Portugal producing 50% of cork worldwide. Cork consists mostly of suberin.

Sources and harvesting
There are about 2,200,000 hectares of cork forest worldwide; 33% in Portugal, and 23% in Spain. Annual production is about 340,000 Tons; 52% from Portugal, 32% from Spain, 6% Italy.
Once the trees are about 25 years old the cork is stripped from the trunks every 9 years. The trees live for about 200 years. The first 2 harvests produce poorer quality cork.
The cork industry is generally regarded as environmentally friendly. The sustainability of production and the easy recycling of cork products and by-products are two of its most distinctive aspects. However, only two cork companies, Oeneo Bouchage of France, and the Cork Supply Group of Portugal, have conducted and released their complete carbon footprint studies.
Since cork oak forests now comprise the majority of habitat for the Iberian lynx, one of the most endangered cat species in the world, the lynx's survival is believed to depend upon the continued viability of cork production.
Properties and uses
Cork's elasticity combined with its near-impermeability makes it suitable as a material for bottle stoppers, especially for wine bottles. Cork stoppers represent about 60% of all cork based production.
Cork's low density makes it a suitable material for fishing floats and buoys, as well as handles for fishing rods (as an alternative to neoprene).
Sheets of cork, often the by-product of more lucrative stopper production, are used to make floor tiles and bulletin boards.
Granules of cork can also be mixed into concrete. The composites made by mixing cork granules and cement have low thermal conductivity, low density and good energy absorption. Some of the property ranges of the composites are density (4001500kg/m3), compressive strength (126 MPa) and flexural strength (0.54.0MPa).
Use for wine bottle closures
As late as the mid 1600s, French vintners did not use cork stoppers, using oil-soaked rags stuffed into the necks of bottles instead.
Natural cork closures are used for about 80% of the 20 billion bottles of wine produced each year.[citation needed] After a decline in use as wine-stoppers due to the increase in the use of cheaper synthetic alternatives, cork wine-stoppers are making a comeback and currently represent approximately 60% of wine-stoppers today.
Cork is an ideal material for use as a bottle stoppers. Because of the cellular structure of cork, it is easily compressed upon insertion into a bottle and will expand to form a tight seal. The interior diameter of the neck of glass bottles tends to be inconsistent, making this ability to contract and expand to seal, an important attribute.
Since the mid-1990's, a number of wine brands have switched to alternative wine closures such as synthetic plastic stoppers, screwcaps, or other closures. Screwcaps are often seen as a cheap alternative destined only for the low grade wines. These alternatives to real cork have their own properties, some adventageous and others controversial. For example, while screwtops are generally considered to offer a TCA trichloroanisole free seal they reduce the oxygen transfer rate to almost zero, which can lead to reductive qualities in the wine. TCA is one of the primary causes of cork taint in wine. However, in recent years major cork producers (Amorim, varo Coelho & Irm?os, Cork Supply Group and Oeneo) have developed methods that remove most, but not all TCA from natural wine corks. Natural cork stoppers are important because they allow oxygen to interact with wine for proper aging, and are best suited for bold red wines purchased with the intent to age.
A study made public in December 2008 by PricewaterhouseCoopers, commissioned by cork manufacturer Amorim, concluded that cork is the most environmentally responsible stopper, in a one-year life cycle analysis comparison with the plastic stoppers and aluminium screwcaps.
Other uses
Cork is used in musical instruments, particularly woodwind instruments, where it is used to fasten together segments of the instrument, making the seams airtight. Conducting baton handles are also often made out of cork.
Cork can be used as bricks for the outer walls of houses, as in Portugal's...(and so on)

The FC Twin Video Game System is a Famiclone that can play Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) games. It retails between $45 to $60. The system has been well received due to the increasing scarcity of original hardware. The system has been followed by a number of similar console "remakes": the Retro Duo Twin Video Game System for NES & SNES games, the SG Twin Video Game System for Sega Genesis & NES games, Gen-X Dual Station Video Game System for Gensis and NES games and the Yobo FC 3 Plus for Genesis, SNES and NES games.

Compatibility
The FC Twin Video Game System has separate circuitry and card slots for both hardware NES and Super Nintendo Entertainment System, allowing it to play games for both consoles. It features a single-pole, double-throw power switch with open position; the switch can be thrown to 8-Bit (NES) or 16-Bit (SNES), or set to off.
NES compatibility
The FC Twin console uses SNES compatible controllers and devices such as the Super Scope and Konami Justifier light guns, but cannot use NES compatible controllers and devices such as the NES Zapper peripheral for Duck Hunt. The Super Nintendo controller buttons otherwise map to the NES controller inputs (B maps to Y, A maps to B. A maps to turbo B, X maps to turbo A; L and R serve no function). When using any controllers besides the actual FC Twin ones, the A and X buttons do nothing during NES play. Gauntlet II pauses when L or R is hit.
The FC Twin connects through an RCA connector, and can be hooked into a surround sound system. When using stereo and surround output from these systems, NES sounds and music may seem very different from their typical mono output. Using output modes that properly generate mono sound, either through a single center speaker or cloned to multiple speakers, the sound output sounds mostly identical to the original NES. The FC Twin does not produce some sounds faithfully, even with mono output; sound effects in the Super Mario Bros. series games will for example immediately seem different. Nevertheless, some later models of the console produce NES sound much more faithfully than units made closer to launch. Recent models produce sound with complete fidelity.

FC Twin with two games in it
The FC Twin uses a card slot reader rather than a ZIF connector. The second-generation NES also used a card slot reader, and featured no 10NES lock-out chip; however, unlike the top-loading NES 2, the FC Twin is completely compatible with the Galoob Game Genie without the use of an adaptor. Both the official NES2 and the FC Twin capitalize on the card slot reader's greater reliability; games rarely suffer from bad connections as they did with the original ZIF socket. In the FC Twin, the NES cartridge still has to be reseated occasionally; the pins can misalign and short across each other or otherwise fail to connect properly; you have to maneuver the game cartridge until it works.
As tested by consumers, the following NES games are not compatible with the FC Twin:
"After Burner"
"Battletoads" (the game hangs at the second level, however, if warps are used, this is passable and the rest of the game works perfect)
Captain Planet and the Planeteers
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (works on FC Dual and Retro Duo System)
Cheetahmen II
Challenge of the Dragon
Crystal Mines
Dragon Warrior II
Gemfire
Laser Invasion
L'Empereur
Paperboy
Pipe Dream
Mad Max
The Krion Conquest
Uncharted Waters
At times different copies of the same game can behave differently in the FC Twin. This may be explained by a malfunction with the cartridge itself. Some copies of Dragon Warrior or Super Mario Bros. 2 for example will not work in the FC Twin; while other copies of the same games will operate in the same machine. In other cases, the system simply does not function with certain expansion chips, such as those in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse.
SNES compatibility
The FC Twin uses Super Nintendo compatible controllers and devices, and can thus connect to specialized input devices such as the SNES Mouse for Mario...(and so on)

Game platforms
Initially released for the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, Commodore Amiga and Atari ST by Ocean Software and for the NES by Acclaim, the game was later released for the Sega Master System, Mega Drive/Genesis and handheld Game Gear console under Acclaim's "Flying Edge" label. There is also an LCD game of the same name.
Acclaim would produce two official sequels to the game: The Simpsons: Bart vs. The World and The Simpsons: Bartman Meets Radioactive Man for the NES. Many more video games would be released featuring The Simpsons characters - there are twenty two games in the series up to and including 2007's The Simpsons Game, although the license has been through the hands of several publishers so it is unclear whether all the games take place in the same continuity, most likely not though as the games never really reference each other unlike how the episodes may tend to do.
Plot and game objectives
In the single player game, Bart Simpson is the only one who knows of the aliens' secret plan and he has to stop them from collecting the items they need to build their weapons to take over the world. In each level, Bart must collect a certain number of a specific item (e.g., purple objects, hats, balloons, exit signs, nuclear rods), before he meets up with a boss at the end of the level.
The bosses, like the levels, are familiar to fans of the Simpsons animated series and some of the television humor does appear in the game: in the first level Bart can make a prank call to Moe in order for him to run outside so that the player can spray paint his purple shirt.
Although Bart fights aliens in this game, he does not fight Kang and Kodos, the two aliens that appear regularly on the show in Treehouse of Horror and other episodes.
Equipment
Bart is able to utilize a variety of items in the game.
Xray Glasses: The major defensive weapons are x-ray glasses that reveal which of the Springfield citizens are human and which are aliens in disguise (similar to the film They Live). Jumping on the aliens will force them to flee the human body and leave behind an icon that begins to spell one of the Simpson's family names (i.e. Homer, Maggie, Marge or Lisa). If Bart manages to jump on enough aliens to spell out the family member's name, that family member will appear to assist him in defeating the boss. However, if Bart jumps on a human being, he will take damage.
Spray Paint: Bart uses spray paint in Level 1 to turn a variety of purple items red.
Slingshot: Bart uses a slingshot in Level 3 to hit balloons, and for certain carnival games.
Dart Gun: The dart gun is used in the Museum. It can hit exit signs and is the only fire arm that can stun enemies.
Wrench: The wrench is used in level one to activate fire hydrants.
Cherry bombs: Can startle animals when dropped on the ground. However, the player runs the risk of summoning angry, damage-inflicting pitbull dogs if used.
Rockets: Rockets are toy fireworks that can be used to launch at signs, windows, and other items.
Key: Can be used as a warp item in Level 1.
Whistle: The whistle is used to get Grandpa Simpson to give you coins in Level 1. However, the player runs the risk of summoning angry, damage-inflicting pitbull dogs if used.
Doughnuts: Boxes of these are found only in the final level. If used, Homer will eliminate any enemies on the screen.
Other Items: Bart is only able to withstand two direct hits per life, and after three lives it is Game Over. Collecting Krusty icons give an extra life, Bart can also collect coins to purchase weapons or to gain an extra life (after reaching 15 coins, but ten are deducted upon receiving the extra life). Busts of Jebadiah Springfield give Bart a brief few seconds of invincibility.

Aluminium sulfate, written as Al2(SO4)3 or Al2O12S3 Aluminium sulfate is an industrial chemical used as a flocculating agent in the purification of drinking water and waste water treatment plants, and also in paper manufacturing.
Aluminium sulfate is sometimes incorrectly referred to as alum but alums are closely related compounds typified by KAl(SO4)2.12H2O. The anhydrous form occurs naturally as a rare mineral millosevichite, found i.e. in volcanic environments and on burning coal-mining waste dumps. Aluminium sulfate is rarely, if ever, encountered as the anhydrous salt. It forms a number of different hydrates, of which the hexadecahydrate Al2(SO4)3?16H2O and octadecahydrate Al2(SO4)3?18H2O are the most common. The heptadecahydrate, whose formula can be written as [Al(H2O)6]2(SO4)3?5H2O, occurs naturally as the mineral alunogen.

Preparation
Aluminium sulfate may be made by dissolving aluminium hydroxide, Al(OH)3, in sulfuric acid, H2SO4:
2 Al(OH)3 + 3 H2SO4 ? Al2(SO4)36H2O
Uses
Aluminium Sulfate is used in water purification and as a mordant in dyeing and printing textiles. In water purification, it causes impurities to coagulate which are removed as the particulate settles to the bottom of the container or more easily filtered. This process is called coagulation or flocculation.
When dissolved in a large amount of neutral or slightly-alkaline water, aluminium sulfate produces a gelatinous precipitate of aluminium hydroxide, Al(OH)3. In dyeing and printing cloth, the gelatinous precipitate helps the dye adhere to the clothing fibers by rendering the pigment insoluble.
Aluminium sulfate is sometimes used to reduce the pH of garden soil, as it hydrolyzes to form the aluminium hydroxide precipitate and a dilute sulfuric acid solution.
Aluminium sulfate is the active ingredient of some antiperspirants; however, beginning in 2005 the US Food and Drug Administration no longer recognized it as a wetness reducer.
Aluminium sulfate is usually found in baking powder, where there is controversy over its use due to concern regarding the safety of adding aluminum to the diet.
In construction industry it is used as waterproofing agent and accelerator in concrete. Another use is a foaming agent in fire fighting foam.
It is also used in styptic pencils, and pain relief from stings and bites; it is the active ingredient in popular pain relief products such as Stingose.
It can also be very effective as a molluscicide, killing spanish slugs.

A typical reborn doll. Note the added cloth body on the limbs, and the "rear plate" to make it more realistic.
A reborn doll is a vinyl baby doll that has been enhanced to resemble a human baby. The process of creating a reborn doll is referred to as reborning. The technique of reborning has evolved over the past five years with heat set paints and oils being the most used amongst artists. Completed reborn dolls are popular among collectors, who buy them on eBay or from doll artists (Reborners).

Basic reborning methods
The technique of reborning a play doll typically involves the following processes:
The doll is taken apart and factory paint is removed. In the last few years reborn or doll sculptors have begun sculpting model babydolls and make vinyl kits that are made specifically for reborning. These kits do not have factory paint, and the doll does not come assembled.
Previously, a purple color wash was applied to the inside of each vinyl part to give the appearance of realistic baby skin undertones, but blue or purple has the tendency to bleed or seep through the vinyl causing a 'bruised' appearance.
The exterior is painted using various techniques to add to the appearance of translucent skin tones, with effects such as veins, blotching, and "milk-spots" to resemble the skin of a newborn baby.
Hair and eyelashes, usually fine mohair or human hair, are applied using rooting tools and felting needles strand by strand, which can take up to 30+ hours per head.
The original vinyl body is replaced with a soft stuffed and weighted body. The vinyl body can also be cut in half to create front and back 'plates' to allow mounting of the doll to photograph or display the doll.
A magnet/s may be attached inside the mouth/head for attaching a dummy/pacifier or hair bows.
Motherly interaction
A phenomenon beyond collecting has arisen of adults, particularly older women, treating 'reborns' as living babies. Studies suggest that when cuddling a baby, real or realistic, hormones release causing emotional well-being.

A Typical Reborn Doll. Baby Emmaline by Donna Lee Originals.
In July 2008, police in Queensland, Australia smashed a car window to rescue what seemed like an unconscious baby only to find it was a reborn doll. The police stated that the doll was "incredibly lifelike" and that bystanders who thought a baby was actually dying were frightened by the incident.
A 10 December 2008 episode of Dr. Phil entitled "Obsessions" discussed the topic of reborning.
A January 2008 Channel 4 series, My Fake Baby, explored the lives of women who collect the lifelike baby dolls.
A 2 January 2009 ABC News article described both the manufacturing and the emotional interaction of reborn dolls.
A 2 January 20/20 episode talked about the mothering process and attachment to reborns.

Plot
The Doctor takes Rose to five billion years into her future in the TARDIS, landing on "Platform One", a space station in orbit around Earth; the earth has long since been abandoned and under the National Trust, but as money has run out, it is about to be destroyed by the expansion of the Sun, only presently held back by gravity satellites. The Doctor uses "psychic paper" to pass as their invitation to the party, and he and Rose find many elite extraterrestrial beings there to celebrate the end of the earth in the protection of Platform One's automated shields. The guests include Lady Cassandra O'Brien Dot Delta Seventeen, simply a face on a large piece of skin that must be continually moisturized, mounted on a frame with her brain in a jar below it, who calls herself the last human in the universe. The guests exchange gifts as part of the celebration (including Lady Cassandra's gift of a Wurlitzer jukebox, calling it an "iPod"). Rose is overwhelmed by the strange beings and customs as well as how distant she is from home, and leaves to an observation room to collect her thoughts. The Doctor follows her, and tries to cheer her up by allowing her to call her mum Jackie after altering her mobile phone to be able to work over the distance in time; this however only serves to depress Rose more.
Meanwhile, the gifts brought by the Adherents of the Repeated Meme, small metallic spheres, are revealed to contain robotic spiders that immediately work at disabling functions on Platform One. The Steward of Platform One recognizes something is wrong, but is killed when the spiders cause the solar filter of his room to lower, exposing him directly to the powerful solar radiation. The Doctor goes to investigate with the help of Jabe, a humanoid plant being from the Forest of Cheem, and discover the Steward's death and the spiders. Rose attempts to learn more from Lady Cassandra but only gets more upset over Cassandra's arrogance, and walks away, only to be knocked out by members of the Meme. She wakes up in an observation room, the solar shield slowly lowering, and calls for the Doctor to save her. The Doctor finds he can stop and raise the shield, but cannot unlock the observation room, and so turns to the various guests.
The Doctor uses a spider that he captured to determine that while the Meme released them, they are only empty shells, and that the real controller is Lady Cassandra. Cassandra admits to this, and was planning to use the situation as a hostage crisis to get money to pay for her repeated operations, but now will simply let the assembled guests die, then profit from the stock increases of their competitors when they are dead. Cassandra transmats to her ship as the spiders bring down the shielding and the gravity satellites are turned off; The direct radiation causes the solar filters to strain and crack, killing several of the guests from the intense radiation exposure, and leaving Rose to scurry to find some shelter within the observation room. The Doctor and Jabe travel to the bowels of Platform One where the system to restore the automated shields is located, though it requires one of them to travel through several spinning fans. Jabe recognizes the Doctor as the last Time Lord after The Time War, and sacrifices herself to hold down a switch to stop the fan blades, allowing the Doctor to...(and so on)

The Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount
The Dome of the Rock (Arabic: ???? ??? ???????, translit.: Masjid Qubbat As-Sakhrah, Hebrew: ???? ?????, translit.: Kipat Hasela, Turkish: Kubbet Sahra) is an Islamic shrine and a major landmark located on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. It was completed in 691, making it the oldest extant Islamic building in the world. Its significance stems from the religious beliefs regarding the rock at its heart.

Location, construction and dimensions
The Dome of the Rock is located at the visual center of an ancient man-made platform known as the Temple Mount, which Muslims refer to as the "Noble Sanctuary". The platform, greatly enlarged under the rule of Herod the Great, is the site of the Second Jewish Temple which was destroyed during the Roman Siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE. In 637 CE, Jerusalem was conquered by the Rashidun Caliphate army during the Islamic invasion of the Byzantine Empire.
The Dome of the Rock was erected between 685 and 691 CE. The names of the two engineers in charge of the project are given as: Yazid Ibn Salam from Jerusalem and Raja Ibn Haywah from Baysan. Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan who initiated construction of the Dome, hoped that it would ouse the Muslims from cold and heat and intended the building to serve as a shrine for pilgrims and not as a mosque for public worship. Historians contend that the Caliph wished to create a structure which would compete with the existing buildings of other religions in the city. al-Maqdisi writes that he
ought to build for the Muslims a masjid that should be unique and a wonder to the world. And in like manner, is it not evident that Caliph Abd al-Malik, seeing the greatness of the martyrium of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and its magnificence was moved lest it should dazzle the minds of Muslims and hence erected above the Rock the dome which is now seen there.

Print from 1887. (Architect Frederick Catherwood was the first westerner known to have made detailed drawings of the Dome of the Rock, which he accomplished during a six-week period in 1833)
Prof. Shlomo Dov Goitein of the Hebrew University states that the Dome of the Rock was intended to compete with the many fine buildings of worship of other religions. The very form of a rotunda, given to the Qubbat as-Sakhra, although it was foreign to Islam, was intended to rival the many Christian domes. A.C. Cresswell in his book Origin of the plan of the Dome of the Rock notes that those who built the shrine made use of the measurements of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The diameter of the dome of the shrine is 20m 20cm and its height 20m 48cm, while the diameter of the dome of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is 20m 90cm and its height 21m 5cm. Mark Crinson, a scholar of the architecture of imperialism, sees the Dome of the Rock as the "archetypal missionary and imperial building (with) its exterior covered with decoration and inscriptions directed by the new Muslim rulers at the local Christian population."
The structure is basically octagonal. It comprises a wooden dome, approximately 60 feet (20 m) in diameter, which is mounted on an elevated drum consisting of a circle of 16 piers and columns. Surrounding this circle is an octagonal arcade of 24 piers and columns. During his travels in Jerusalem, Mark Twain wrote that:
very where about the Mosque of Omar are portions of pillars, curiously wrought altars, and fragments of elegantly carved marble - precious remains of Solomon's Temple. These have been dug from all depths in the soil and rubbish of Mount Moriah, and the Moslems have always shown a disposition to preserve them with the utmost care.8]

Exterior detail
The outer side walls are made of porcelain and mirror the octagonal design. They each measure approximately 60 feet (18 m) wide and 36 feet (11 m) high. Both the dome and the exterior walls contain many windows.
The Dome

The Dome of the Rock, in 1913.
Exterior
The Dome is in the shape of a Byzantine martyrium, a structure intended for the housing and veneration of saintly relics, and is an excellent example of middle Byzantine art. al-Maqdisi reports that surplus funds consisting of 100,000 gold dinar coins were melted down and cast on the dome's exterior, hich at the time had a strong glitter that no eye could look straight at it. During the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent the...(and so on)

Rouge de Rance (Red of Rance) is a red limestone from the town of Rance in Wallonia (Belgium).

Pilasters in Rouge de Rance in the "Galerie des Glaces"
The red "marble" of Rance in the Belgian province of Hainaut knew a large popularity as a prestigious building material for decorative use. Although it was exploited since Roman Antiquity it became most renowned since the 17th century because of its prolific use in the Royal Chateau of Versailles built for the French king Louis XIV. Large quantities were used for the most prestigious parts of the building, including the interior wall decoration of the "Galerie des Glaces" (Hall of Mirors) and the columns of the main portico on the "Cour des Marbres" (Marble Courtyard). To satisfy the vast demand needed for Versailles and other French royal residences a new quarry was opened and subsequently named "Trou de Versailles" (hole of Versailles). Since the 18th century "Rouge de Rance" was also popular as a material for fireplaces and as a top for furniture such as commodes or tables.
Several Belgian red limestones, including "Rouge de Rance" were later marketed under the name "Rouge Belge" (Belgian Red). These limestone varieties are commonly referred to as "red marble", although they are no real marbles but sedimentary rocks.

Baptismal font in Rouge de Rance in Sts. Cyril and Methodius's church in Olomouc.
The exploitation of the quarries in Rance stopped in the 1950's. A museum on Belgian Marbles was opened in Rance in 1979.

Like Life (??????? ,Raiku Raifu?) is an adult Japanese visual novel developed by Hooksoft which was released on May 28, 2004 playable on the PC as a CD; a PlayStation 2 consumer console port called Like Life an hour followed on April 28, 2005 by GN Software. An updated version of the original game released on September 28, 2007 called Like Life Renewal Edition (Like Life??? ,Like Life Shins?ban?), compatible up to Windows Vista, is playable on a PC as a DVD. The gameplay in Like Life follows a plot line which offers pre-determined scenarios with courses of interaction, and focuses on the appeal of the five female main characters. The story revolves around Kazuma K?saka who is living a normal life in his aunt's home while he attends high school. One day, objects all over town start turning into girls, and his mobile phone is no exception; after the transformation, Kazuma names her Himeko K?saka.
Four light novels based on Like Life were released between August 2004 and April 2005 written by J?ji Kamio. An adult fandisc for Hyoko, one of the supporting characters, was released at Comiket 67 on December 29, 2004 called Like Life Hyokoban, playable on the PC as a CD. There have been four drama CDs released: two bundled with the limited edition of the PS2 game, one with the original release of Life Like Hyokoban, and the last was based on the PS2 game version and was released in Japanese store in January 2005.

Gameplay
The gameplay requires little interaction from the player as most of the duration of the game is spent on simply reading the text that will appear on the screen; this text represents either dialogue between the various characters, or the inner thoughts of the protagonist. Every so often, the player will come to a "decision point" where he or she is given the chance to choose from options that are displayed on the screen, typically two to three at a time. During these times, gameplay pauses until a choice is made that furthers the plot in a specific direction, depending on which choice the player makes.

Like Life Renewal Edition video game cover.
There are five main plot lines that the player will have the chance to experience, one for each of the heroines in the story. In order to view the five plot lines to their entirety, the player will have to replay the game multiple times and choose different choices during the decision points in order to further the plot in an alternate direction.
Release history
Like Life was first introduced to the public in Japan on May 28, 2004 as a CD-ROM playable on a Microsoft Windows PC and retailed for 8,800 yen (~$US76.63) without tax. A version for the PlayStation 2, retaining its adult rating, called Like Like an hour, was developed by GN Software and released in Japan on April 28, 2005 in limited and regular editions. The limited edition PS2 game retailed for 7,800 yen (~US$67.79), while the regular edition retailed for 6,800 yen (~US$59.10) and featured a different cover than the limited edition; both prices are before tax. The limited edition PS2 release came bundled with two drama CDs entitled Like Life radio hour and Like Life Typical Hot Spring Traveler's Journal (Life Like????? ,Like Life Teki Onsen Kik??), and a music CD containing twenty-one tracks used in the game. The PS2 version was re-released at the cheaper price of 2,800 yen (~US$24.23) on August 24, 2006, and its rating dropped to ages seventeen and up. A portable version, playable on FOMA cellular phones, was produced by NTT DoCoMo on August 17, 2007, selling for 840 yen (~US$7.29). Various patches were...(and so on)

The mollusc shell or mollusk shell[spelling 1] is typically a calcareous exoskeleton which encloses, supports and protects the soft parts of an animal in the phylum Mollusca.
In everyday language, mollusc shells are often simply known as "shells", or in the case of marine species, "seashells".
The ancestral mollusc is thought to have had a shell, but this has subsequently been lost or reduced on some families, such as the squid, octopus, and some smaller groups such as the caudofoveata and solenogastres, and the highly derived Xenoturbella.
Malacology, the scientific study of molluscs as living organisms, has a branch devoted to the study of shells, and this is called conchology - although it should be noted that these terms used to be, and to a minor extent still are, used interchangeably, even by scientists (this is more common in Europe).
Within some species of molluscs there is often a surprising degree of variation in the exact shape, pattern, ornamentation, and color of the shell.

Shell formation

The giant clam (Tridacna gigas) is the largest extant species of bivalve. The mantle is visible between the open valves
A mollusc shell is formed, repaired and maintained by a part of the anatomy called the mantle. Any injuries to or abnormal conditions of the mantle are usually reflected in the shape and form and even color of the shell. When the animal encounters harsh conditions which limit its food supply, or otherwise cause it to become dormant for a while, the mantle often ceases to produce the shell substance. When conditions improve again and the mantle resumes its task, a "growth line" is produced.
In shelled molluscs, the mantle is what forms the shell, and what adds to the shell to increase its size and strength as the animal grows. Shell material is secreted by the ectodermic (epithelial) cells of the mantle tissue.
Mollusc blood is rich in a soluble form of calcium, and this calcium is concentrated and crystallized as calcium carbonate (CaCO3).
In those shelled molluscs that have indeterminate growth, the shell grows steadily over the lifetime of the mollusc by the addition of calcium carbonate to the leading edge or opening. Thus the shell gradually becomes longer and wider, in an increasing spiral shape, to better accommodate the growing animal inside. The animal also thickens the shell as it grows, so that the shell stays proportionately strong for its size.
Shell structure
The shell of a mollusc is formed of two or three layers. The outermost shell layer in many molluscs is composed solely of organic material, and is known as the periostracum. The inner layers of the shell are formed of calcium carbonate crystalized into an organic matrix. The individual crystals of each shell layer differ in shape and orientation, such that one layer is calcite and another aragonite. Thin new layers of shell are continually deposited onto the inner surface of the animal's shell.
In some mollusc shells the inner layer is especially strong, and is iridescent. This layer is known as nacre or mother of pearl.
The calcium carbonate layers in a shell are generally of two types: an outer, chalk-like prismatic layer and an inner pearly, lamellar or nacreous layer. The layers usually incorporate a substance called conchiolin, often in order to help bind the calcium carbonate crystals together. Conchiolin is composed largely of quinone-tanned proteins.
The periostracum and prismatic layer are secreted by a marginal band of cells, so that the shell grows at its outer edge. Conversely, the nacreous layer is derived from the main surface of the mantle.
Some shells contain pigments which are incorporated into the structure. This is what accounts for the striking colors and patterns that can be seen in some species of seashells, and the shells of some tropical land snails. These shell pigments sometimes include compounds such as pyrroles and porphyrins.
Shells are almost always composed of polymorphs of calcium carbonate - either calcite or aragonite. In...(and so on)

Tennis Girl
The Tennis Girl poster is a hugely popular iconic poster. It shows a young woman from behind walking towards the net of a tennis court with a tennis racquet in her right hand and her left hand reaching behind lifting her short tennis dress, showing she is not wearing any underwear.
The photograph was taken by Martin Elliott in September 1976 and features then-18-year-old Fiona Butler, his girlfriend at the time. The photo was taken at Birmingham University, Edgbaston, Birmingham, using a borrowed dress, racquet and balls.
History
The poster was first published as part of a calendar by Athena for the 1977 Silver Jubilee, the same year Virginia Wade achieved the Wimbledon ladies singles title.
The poster achieved widespread distribution when licensed to the poster shop Athena in 1978 where it sold for ?2. It sold about 2 million copies by the time Athena collapsed in the early 2000s.
The model Fiona Butler has stated "I'm not at all embarrassed about that photo."
Popularity and parody
The image is much sought after by collectors and celebrities including Jonathan Ross and Ricky Gervais.
Over the years the picture has been parodied by various people as diverse as Alan Carr and Kylie Minogue.

Development of cold front
The cooler, denser air wedges under the less dense warmer air, lifting it, which can cause the formation of a narrow line of showers and thunderstorms when enough moisture is present. This upward motion causes lowered pressure along the cold front. On weather maps, the surface position of the cold front is marked with the symbol of a blue line of triangles/spikes (pips) pointing in the direction of travel. A cold front's location is at the leading edge of the temperature drop off, which in an isotherm analysis would show up as the leading edge of the isotherm gradient, and it normally lies within a sharp surface trough. Cold fronts can move up to twice as fast and produce sharper changes in weather than warm fronts. Since cold air is denser than warm air, it rapidly replaces the warm air preceding the boundary. Cold fronts, are usually associated with an area of low pressure, and sometimes, a warm front.
In the northern hemisphere, a cold front usually causes a shift of wind from southeast to northwest, and in the southern hemisphere a shift from northeast to southwest. Common characteristics associated with cold fronts include:

Illustration of a cold front
A cold front commonly brings a narrow band of precipitation that follows along the leading edge of the cold front. These bands of precipitation are often very strong in nature, and especially in the Spring and Summer months, can bring severe thunderstorms and/or tornadoes. In the spring, these cold fronts can be very strong, and can bring strong winds when the pressure gradient is tighter than normal. In the summer, cold fronts can cause severe thunderstorms and hailstorms, but in the winter, cold fronts sometimes come through an area with little or no precipitation, and with little or no effect on temperature. In the autumn months, cold fronts rarely bring severe thunderstorms, but are known for bringing heavy, and widespread rainstorms. These rainstorms sometimes bring flooding, and can move very slowly because cold fronts are more prone to slow movement in the fall. In the winter, cold fronts can bring severe cold spells, and heavy snowstorms. If moisture is not sufficient, cold fronts can pass without producing any precipitation at all, and the skies could be cloudless. Cold fronts do not produce the moisture, it will just condense against the cold air into cloud and rain droplets if there is enough water vapor in either airmass. Because the cold air wedges under the warm air, it forces it to rise, creating instability. If moisture is sufficient, it will condense, creating storms, clouds, and/or rain.
Temperature changes
Cold fronts are the leading edge of a frigid air mass, hence the name "cold front". They can bring several cold spells in the fall (autumn) and winter. Very often, cold fronts are associated with deadly cold weather. Sometimes, though, cold fronts have no significant effect on the weather. The cold fronts in the late fall become more polar in nature, and tend to bring very cold weather, and temperature drops by up to 30. When cold fronts come through, there is usually a quick, yet strong gust of wind, that shows that the cold front is passing. The effects from a cold front can last only a few hours to several weeks, depending on when the next weather...(and so on)

Description
Appearance

Posing a Peruvian Hairless Dog
According to the FCI breed standard, the most important aspect of its appearance is its hairlessness. The dog may have short hair on top of its head, on its feet, and on the tip of its tail. In Peru, breeders tend to prefer completely hairless dogs. The full-coated variety is disqualified from conformation showing. The color of skin can be chocolate-brown, elephant grey, copper, or mottled. They can be totally one color or one color with tongue pink spots. Albinism is not allowed. The eye color is linked to the skin color. It's always brown, but dogs with light colors can have clearer eyes than darker-skinned dogs.
Peruvian Hairless Dogs vary in size:
Small (or peque?o), 25 to 40 cm (10 to 16 inches)
Medium (or medio), 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20 inches)
Large (or grande), 50 to 65 cm (20 to 26 inches)
The smallest weighs from 4 kg (9 lb) and the largest up to 25 kg (55 lb).
The dogs should be slim and elegant, with the impression of force and harmony, without being coarse.
The ears should be candle-flame shaped and erect with the possibility to lay flat.
Proportions of height (at withers) to length (withers to base of tail) are 1:1.
Temperament
Peruvian Hairless dogs are affectionate with family but wary of strangers. They are typically lively, alert and friendly with other dogs but can be protective as well. These dogs do not like to be alone, but when trained, can do well. These dogs are intolerant of extreme temperatures and are agile and fast. They generally require an owner that understands dog language and are not recommended for beginners.
Care

Hairless dog - Trujillo, Peru
The lack of hair leads to a reputation for being clean, for being easy to wash with a sponge, and for a natural lack of fleas or other parasites. Despite this, the dog needs as much care as other dogs, but in another way. The skin should be taken care of frequently by weekly bathing to keep the skin soft. Almost all of this breed tend to have acne or at least blackheads. The skin often becomes too dry and can be treated with moisturizing cream.
Protection against bright sunlight is necessary so sun-block should be used to prevent sunburn.
Protection against cold may be necessary when it gets colder. Sensitivity to cold may vary from dog to dog. Smaller dogs seem to be more sensitive to the cold than their larger counterparts.
The ears need special attention as they can become dry and cracked easily..
Genetics and health

Peruvian Hairless Dog USA
The genes that cause hairlessness also result in the breed often having fewer teeth than other breeds, mostly lacking molars and premolars.
One theory is that the hairlessness trait is recessive-lethal, which means that homozygotic hairlessness doesn't exist. This results in a birthrate of 2:1, hairless: coated. However, some breeders don't show this result, having a birthrate between 2:1 and 8:1. According to Hans R?ber "Enzyklop?die der Rassehunde" T.I 25% of the population is born coated.
While they are recognized by the KFC for its Foundation Stock Service as Peruvian Orchid dogs, they cannot be shown at AKC shows, they are also registerable with FCI, UKC, NKC,APRI, ACR. Some breeders think that interbreeding with coated (Peruvian) dogs is required to maintain functional teeth and nervous system health in subsequent generations. They say that breeding of hairless with hairless (and common but unacknowledged culling of hairy pups from litters to maintain a "pure" image) leads to short-lived dogs with serious health problems.
